what is Lifestyle newborn photography? Mainly Lifestyle photography is incorporating "real-life events" into a photo session. These moments and activities are ones that 'you're going to remember forever. Mostly these sessions take place in the home, right where life happens.
For some clients the in home part can feel daunting. thoughts like, "my home isn't clean enough" or "modern enough" can squelch the idea of having a lifestyle session.
But remember, the focus of the photos is you and baby and the other family members. these sessions are not about showcasing the kitchen counters or the living room setup. As a photographer it is my job to find pockets of light and then go from there. I will look around and move things that distract. sometimes a coffee table ends up against the opposite wall. toys and magazines are scooped up and moved to a chair out of sight., Blankets and pillows are rearranged or even wall hangings moved. this all might sound pretty posed, but what its doing is creating a clutter free atmosphere so that the viewers eye is pulled in directly to the family as they love on their newborn.
Another hesitation to lifestyle photography is the idea that people only want to see your baby or children. Parents can sometimes feel self-conscious about being in the photos because they feel like they will be scrutinized in a photo. That makes me feel so sad. Dear friends, this is not about a frozen pose but about the interaction of life with your loved ones. Let me remind you that lifestyle photography captures emotion. it captures joy and love. these emotions make a person radiate beauty! as viewers, it draws us in. These sessions are all about showcasing the love within your home.
here is something to think about, The best way to get children to laugh and relax is by having mom or dad engage them during the session. It works every time, as it should. Mom and Dad your presence brings a sense of security. If you are asking your children to do something (like get in front of a camera) but you are unwilling to do the same, it reinforces in their minds that what they are being asked to do is something hard or scary. I LOVE when the moms and dads jump right in and play with and love on the kids. Not only are fun memories made but the smiles are captured as well.
Lifestyle sessions not only produce beautiful emotion filled photos to hang on your wall, but the bonus is the memory that gets attached to it. When you see that photo on your wall, my desire is that you won't remember a session that you were shushing your child and frustrated because the the 2 year old wouldn't sit still. But rather that you'd remember how fun the session was. You'd laugh at the antics of the 2 year old because it didn't really matter if he was sitting or standing or hugging or playing with a toy or just complete done with photos, because in lifestyle session all those things are ok! we don't stress over it. if the toddler doesn't want to sit than that's a great time to do one on one photos of mom or dad with baby. As the photographer i come with a plan but I also come with the desire that the session be building a good memory. That is why i love lifestyle photography, its a time that you set aside the dishes and the laundry and the meal prep, instead you get to focus on loving your sweet baby and all the other members of the family.
